Youth

FootstepsWe want Footsteps to be a place where you can relax, enjoy some time off and talk to other adults without interruption.  We want it to be somewhere where you can discuss the joys and difficulties of being a parent with other people like yourself who understand exactly what you’re going through.  We want you to feel appreciated for the immensely difficult but rewarding job you do in parenting your children.  We want you to feel loved, valued and cared for.  And while you’re being pampered, refreshed and equipped, we can’t forget the children!  We want Footsteps to be a place where they can make friends, develop social skills, play with new and exciting toys and learn to do so without your constant presence.

If Footsteps is running the way it is intended, it should provide an oasis of peace and friendship in the midst of a busy and sometimes fraught week.

Who is it for?
Anyone who is looking after young children is welcome to come and join us.  We accept children from birth to age 5.  Although mainly attended by parents, grandparents and other carers are also welcome.

How does it work?
We meet twice weekly in the White Swan Centre in Killingworth.  Our doors open at 9.30am on Wednesdays and 1.45pm on Fridays.  Once you have registered your child and they have settled in the creche, you are free to go through to the parents’ room and have something to eat and drink.  The talk will not start until most parents have had the opportunity to settle their children.  Following the talk there will be an opportunity to ask questions and chat informally.  There’ll even be the chance to have another drink and more cake before collecting your child at the end.

Places are limited at each session due to the number of adults we have available.  We encourage our volunteers to commit to helping long term, as one volunteer leaving means that we would be oversubscribed.  Some of our volunteers are parents who have benefitted from Footsteps themselves and have come back as helpers once their children have started school.

If you would like to join our waiting list either call in to see us at the White Swan Centre, ring Denise on 0191 2686611 or click here.
